Overcoming the fear of falling

As we age, the fear of falling becomes more real. Even for those who remain active and healthy, the possibility of a fall can be a constant source of anxiety. We understand the fear and the need for practical solutions to help our patients overcome this anxiety. So, how can we reduce the fear of falling? One solution is by learning how to get up in the event of a fall. The backward chaining approach to get up off the floor, involves breaking down the process of getting up into manageable steps and working backward until you can complete the whole process on your own. Here's how the process works:

1. Start with a firm surface such as a yoga mat or carpeted floor. 2. Sit on the surface with your legs straight out in front of you. 3. Bend one knee and place your foot flat on the floor. 4. Put your hands on the floor behind you, using them to support your weight. Shift your weight onto the foot that is flat on the floor. 5. Use the strength in your legs to push up off the floor, coming to a kneeling position. 6. Place one foot in front of the other and shift your weight forward until your back foot is off the floor. 7. Push up to stand, keeping your hands on your thighs for support.

The backward chaining approach helps build confidence by allowing you to focus on one step at a time. Additionally, by practicing the steps in a safe and controlled environment, you can improve your physical abilities and prepare yourself for the possibility of a fall. Knowing what to do in the event of a fall is the key to reducing anxiety around falling. The backward chaining approach is just one of many techniques we use at Helena Amos occupational therapy business to help patients overcome the fear of falling. I met with Helena through work, as I was going through a very bad stage of depression.

Helena met with me at my home, in my own personal space & once upon meeting with Helena, I felt very much at ease & felt I wasn’t being judged.

We talked for 3 hours, in which helped me in so many ways I didn’t think anything could help. I am so very grateful for your time Helena
